School – Purnululu Independent Aboriginal Community School

A teacher in a remote Indigenous community is responsible for teaching literacy across all levels of the school. In the video she works initially with students in the kindergarten using an oral language focus. With a middle primary group she selects an integrated literacy experience. The lesson involves students reflecting on similarities and differences between types of communities starting with their prior knowledge. The teacher ensures that students can express their knowledge in Gija, the local Aboriginal language and in Standard Australian English. She also describes the different uses she makes of diagnostic, formative and summative assessment, emphasising the use of student portfolios.

kpop idols taking advantage of being multilingual

hello! this is sort of an extension of my last video, since i’ve always found the language mixing in kpop super interesting & wanted to compile some of those moments!

also, the clip with nichkhun probably should have gone in my last video, but oh well. i think this video is like the antithesis of the “kpop idols playing the foreigner card” video (which, btw, you can find here! https://youtu.be/Fho7aBS9rkg)

‘The Multilingual Turn in Language Education: An Essential Skill for the 21st Century’, by Dr Nayr Ibrahim (Head of Young Learners and Bilingual Education, British Council, Paris)

The plenary session at our Teaching for Success conference 2017, this talk explores multilingualism as a holistic phenomenon. It looks at how children develop and manage multiple languages, what teachers can do to build on children’s linguistic repertoires, and why a multilingual approach is imperative for educational systems.

Don’t forget to check out overviews of other speakers’ conference talks on:
learner autonomy (https://youtu.be/NAIveZJNLsc);
combating bullying (https://youtu.be/NyPfwDPCpcQ);
getting teenagers talking (https://youtu.be/YujVo5hNEIo);
and integrating speaking into CLIL lessons (https://youtu.be/blCjDBJ5XbY).

Multilingual BERT – Part 1 – Intro and Concepts

multilingual No Comments »

This series will provide an introduction to some of the key concepts and techniques around applying BERT to another language, as well as example code implementations (built on PyTorch and huggingface/transformers).

In Part 1, I’ll explain the difference between a “monolingual” model and a “multilingual” model (and why monolingual isn’t just the obvious choice!), and introduce the concept of Cross-Lingual Transfer. I’ll also describe a couple ways in which we can leverage Machine Translation.

I’ve also published a blog post version of this tutorial here: http://mccormickml.com/2020/10/05/multilingual-bert/

Supporting the multilingual child during Covid-19

multilingual No Comments »

How can parents support bilingual and multilingual children to develop their language skills during the Covid-19 pandemic? How do bilingual and multilingual families adjust their family language learning policy and practice to sustain or expand learning opportunities? What resources and options are available at home and in the communities? These are the main questions this event aims to explore. Hosted by the MOSAIC Group for Research in Multilingualism, School of Education, University of Birmingham, the event will bring together a panel of speakers who will share their experience in promoting the learning of around minoritised languages especially Asian and African languages in the UK. It is open to parents, grandparents, teachers, educators, researchers and anyone interested in supporting heritage language learning and multilingualism.

The panel for this event includes: Dr Fatma Said (College of Education, UAF, Arabic language), Ms Sahra Abdullahi (UCL, Somali languages), Dr Lavanya Sankaran (King’s College, London, Tamil language), Ms Amy Thompson (Manager of a Mandarin/English bilingual nursery) and Ms Gbemisola Isimi (Founder/Director, CultureTree, an organisation promoting African languages).

There will be opportunities for the audience to participate in Open Discussion with the experts and share their experience and views with other parents and professionals.

Building multilingual portals with modern SharePoint capabilities

multilingual No Comments »

In this 41-minute demo targeted to site owners, Microsoft Program Manager – DC Padur, helps viewers appreciate how Multi-Lingual Publishing (MLP) for modern SharePoint delivers a cohesive multilingual site experience for publishers and end-users. This new capability makes it easier for publishers to systematically deliver information in other languages. For users, the capability presents options for locating content in the language they are more comfortable. The system assists the publisher with organizing/managing multi-lingual pages, news, navigation, and as well delivering actionable notifications to keep the single multi-language site-in-sync. General Availability rollout begins in May with availability in all clouds including government by end-of-May, 2020. End-to-end configuration and usage shown in demo.

This PnP community demo is taken from the monthly SharePoint Community (PnP) call recorded on April 14, 2020.

But are there other advantages to having a bilingual (or multilingual) brain? Mia Nacamulli details the three types of bilingual brains and shows how knowing more than one language keeps your brain healthy, complex and actively engaged.
