Dima Ayoub – What can the Digital Humanities Learn from Arabic literature in Translation?

Dima Ayoub is an Assistant Professor of Arabic and C.V. Starr Junior Faculty Fellow in International Studies at Middlebury College where she was also the former director of the Middle East studies program. Her book manuscript Paratext and Power: Modern Arabic Literature in Translation rewrites the social and cultural history of modern Arabic literature in translation by centering the role of publishers, translators and paratexts, in addition to writers. She specializes in translation studies, gender and postcolonial studies. Parallel to her book project, Dr. Ayoub is developing a digital archive of modern Arabic literature in English, French, German and Spanish translation. Her most recent publications appeared in the Journal of Translation Studies, the Journal of Arabic Literature, Middle Eastern Literatures and in the edited collection, Multilingual Literature as World Literature with Bloomsbury.

This is the sixth session of an eighteen-lesson course for absolute beginners wishing to learn Arabic. In this lesson, you will learn how to join the rest of the letters of the alphabet, namely faa’, qaaf, kaaf, laam, meem, noon, haa and yaa’. You will also learn the names of the cardinal numbers from one to ten, as well as how to address someone by name or title.

The course as a whole is based on the book ‘Arabic from the Beginning: Part One’ by Dr. Imran Hamza Alawiye, which is available from the publisher’s website: www.gatewaytoarabic.com. The course teaches everything you need to know to read and write the Arabic script, as well as useful Arabic phrases.

A strong advocate for the modernization of Arabic Language teaching methods, Dr. Hanada Taha discusses the need for increased approachability and accessibility for today’s young learners. Dr. Hanada Taha is the Endowed Chair Professor of Arabic Language and chair of the Arabic department at Zayed University. She was previously the associate and acting dean of Bahrain Teachers College. She has worked on the concept of modernizing Arabic language teaching and learning for the past 27 years and published the Hanada Taha Arabic language arts standards, in addition to the Arabic text leveling standards. She is the senior author of Pearson’s first Arabic language curriculum for native and non-native learners.
